TYPE 1 DIABETES

PREDIABETES

Prediabetes means that the blood sugar level in your body is higher than normal. In this way, we can assume the sign of type 2 diabetes. If we do not change our lifestyle then it can take the form of type 2 diabetes in adults and children with prediabetes. But under the supervision of proper diet, physical exercise, and doctors, we can prevent prediabetes from being converted into type 2 diabetes.

Your doctor may prescribe you prediabetes as follows:

  • Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), which means your blood sugar is higher than normal after a meal.
  • Impaired fasting glucose (IFG), which means your blood sugar is higher than normal before eating in the morning.
  • a hemoglobin A1C level between 5.7 and 6.4 %.

Symptoms of Prediabetes

If you see some of the symptoms below, then you need to
check your blood sugar level.

  • You're a lot thirstier than usual.
  • You pee a lot.
  • Your vision is blurry.
  • You’re a lot more tired than usual
  • sores or cuts that won’t heal.

Risk factors for prediabetes

Prediabetes can happen to anyone, but some factors increase your chances of prediabetes. If you are over 45 or your body mass index (BMI) is over 25, then your doctor may screen you for prediabetes.

Another risk factor is the accumulation of excess weight around the waist compared to the hips. If you are male, your waist is 40 inches or more and if you are female and your waist is 35 inches or more, then you can check this risk factor.

Another risk factor for prediabetes is being sedentary lifestyle.

Race and ethnicity are also risk factors.

How to treat prediabetes

The treatment of prediabetes can also be considered as preventing type 2 diabetes. If your doctor tells you that you have prediabetes, they will recommend some changes in your lifestyle. A study called the Diabetes Prevention Program showed a reduction of about 58 percent among those who persisted with these changes for a long time.

Some common ways to control prediabetes are:

  • You have to eat a diet rich in fiber
  • Exercise regularly
  • You have to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control
  • Stop smoking.
  • If you are overweight then you have to lose weight
  • Take medicine if your doctor has prescribed it

Some people with diabetes choose to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments to manage their condition. But you should not do this. Always start contacting your doctor before starting any CAM treatment as they will give you medicines knowing what type of diabetes you have.

How is prediabetes diagnosed?

Your doctor may ask you to do a blood test to check for prediabetes. He will test your "fasting blood sugar" first. What is your blood sugar level before eating in the morning? The categories of results of a fasting blood sugar test are:

  • Normal =between 70 and 99 mg/ dL
  • Prediabetes = between 100 and 125 mg/dL
  • Diabetes = higher than 126 mg/ dL.

If your fasting blood test shows that you have prediabetes, your doctor may want to do an A1C blood test. In this test result, what is the average sugar level in your body in the last 3 months? Results of this test are noted as a percentage:

  • Normal = below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes = between 5.7% and 6.4%
  • Diabetes = 6.5% or higher.

This will confirm whether you have diabetes or not and
you can start treatment quickly.
