WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes is also known as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes occurs due to high sugar levels over a prolonged period. Whenever you eat something, then your body converts it into sugar which is called glucose.

Blood glucose is our main source of energy, this blood glucose goes from bloodstreams to cells where the pancreas releases a hormone called insulin and when our body does not make enough insulin, then the sugar level in our blood remains high.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease, nerve disease, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypoglycemia etc.

Although there is no cure for diabetes, you can take appropriate steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy. Make some changes in your lifestyle such as eating a nutritious diet, exercising daily that will make you feel healthy.

Sometimes people call diabetes "a touch of sugar" or "borderline diabetes". It states that no one has diabetes or has a less serious case, but every case of diabetes is serious.
